Grooming FAQ’s
Essential Questions About Pet Grooming: What You Need to Know!
What is matting and why does my dog need to be shaved?
Matting is when hair gets tangled up tightly. Debris, dirt, and dander get trapped underneath which can lead to skin conditions or irritations. When matting is severe enough it can cause bruising, sores, or hot spots to develop after the matting is removed. As groomers our job is to protect the safety of your pet at all costs which means we have to cut under the matting. If we cut through the matting the dog can easily get cut because skin gets pulled into the matting. Most hairy dogs need to be groomed a minimum of every 8 weeks for a shorter cut. If the client wishes to have a longer cut that is maintainable, but the dog should be groomed every 4 weeks so we can work together to keep their coat healthy and mat free.
My dog got SKUNKED! What should I do?!
DO NOT GET YOUR DOG WET!!! Mix equal parts baking soda, dawn dish soap, and hydrogen peroxide. Apply this mixture to the affected area without getting the dog wet first. Let this sit for 10-15 minutes, then use a deodorizing dog shampoo. Wash, rinse, and repeat if necessary.
What should I use for flea/tick prevention?
Unfortunately a lot of topical treatments that have been around for a while no longer work because fleas are resistant to them. If you would like to use a topical treatment I recommend K9 Advantix 2. Usually the most effective treatments are oral medications you get with a prescription from your Veterinarian. I use Simparica Trio and my dogs have never experienced a negative reaction or had an issue with fleas/ticks. Other good options include NexGuard and HeartGuard, but always consult your Veterinarian.
I want to try fun colors on my dog, but is it safe?
YES! All of the products that I use in my shop are specifically designed for dogs, are 100% non-toxic, and naturally derived from plants. I also only do color on dogs that have healthy skin and are well behaved for the grooming process. The lightener that I use is a peroxide base that never touches the skin. Coloring services take time and I charge based on the amount of time, products used, and difficulty of the design. Remember although I absolutely love to do this I still have to charge for my time.
Why does it cost so much to groom my pet? My own hair doesn’t cost that much!
A lot of people don’t take into account that not only do we cut your dogs hair, we are giving a full bath, blow dry, clipping and grinding nails, cleaning ears, expressing glands (when needed) and giving them our undivided attention to keep them safe. We get peed on, pooped on, glanded on, bit, scratched, and so many other things. I love what I do but my body hurts and it’s not an easy job. We do so much more for your babies then most people ever realize.
How long does it take to groom my dog?
I usually quote 4 hours for an appointment, although every dog varies based on many factors. Working with live animals sometimes things happen which may cause me to run behind schedule. I also may finish your pet earlier because it was easier for me to get them out before a different dog. I will always do what is best for each individual pet in my care.
